“Frankly, I hate dialogue,” Villeneuve told The Times of London. I don’t remember movies because of a good line, I remember movies because of a strong image. This supposed truism is heard everywhere in the film world and even taught to film writers. Cinema has never been a language of “pure image and sound.”Even in the age of silent films, dialogue rendered as inter-titles was critical to cinema. Charlie Chaplin stars in his 1931 silent film, "City Lights."

How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

Eventually, he invites Priscilla to visit him, only to knock her out for two days with insomnia meds and then whisk her to Las Vegas, where, in a montage of gambling and boozing, Coppola shows Priscilla start to extend her hand for pills herself. For Priscilla, living with Elvis means living with his entourage. Coppola frames a shot of the actress looking out Graceland’s windows as if Priscilla were a Douglas Sirk heroine, trapped. It also brings “Priscilla” closer to Coppola’s aesthetic, freeing her from the literalism of a conventional biopic. The opening credits, which show Priscilla setting foot on a plush carpet and prepping her makeup, bounce along to a 1980 Ramones song.

Paris CNN —Back in the 1980s, when I first began living in Paris, I once had to clamber onto the tiny exterior staircase that surrounds the Eiffel Tower and is used to paint or repair it. Still, at that time, nothing could have impelled me to risk a swim in that other iconic Parisian sight — the Seine River — not without a full biohazard suit. Today’s Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, has made a similar promise, and local authorities have put 1.4 billion euros ($1.55 billion) behind it. Paris has indeed made strides in cleaning up its famous river — water samples from June showed “excellent results” in complying with European regulation, according to city hall. That mythical figure is Val (Pico Alexander), and it’s easy to see why he fascinates Lady (Siff). For most of the play, Jabe is heard rather than seen, making his presence felt by imperiously knocking on the floor of the couple’s quarters, which are above the store. Like Val, Lady is different, which also puts her at odds in the community. Williams writes that Lady “verges on hysteria under a strain,” but Siff (best known for the Showtime series “Billions”) evokes neither. The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that New Jersey can unilaterally withdraw from the longstanding Waterfront Commission Compact it has with New York to police corruption in the shipping industry in the major port the two states share. All nine of the Supreme Court's justices voted to dismiss arguments by New York in favor of forcing New Jersey to stay in the compact. "Since the first hours of our time in office, my Administration has steadfastly pursued the dissolution of the Waterfront Commission because it was the right thing to do," Murphy said. The two-member Waterfront Commission was created in 1953 by New York and New Jersey to address labor corruption in the Port of New York and New Jersey. New York claimed that the agreement "does not allow either State to unilaterally withdraw," Kavanaugh noted in his opinion.
1. Who originated the look? Pinning down the outfit’s genesis is near-impossible, said Chloe Chapin, who’s writing a dissertation on fashion history at Harvard. Late-19th-century coal miners sported early versions of denim dungarees—the progenitors to jeans—noted Ms. Chapin, while white T-shirts rose to prominence when the U.S. Navy began issuing them to sailors around 1913. One thing’s indisputable, said Ms. Chapin: The look began as workwear. “Bluejeans and white T-shirts are…very cheap, accessible to everyone—they were worn by dockworkers and mechanics.”The style, which has cycled in and out of popularity over the decades, has often radiated bad-boy vibes.

Blake's acting work was overshadowed four years later by the Bakley murder, which remains unsolved. A paternity test showed that the father was Blake, not Christian Brando, son of actor Marlon Brando, who Bakley had been dating simultaneously.
